Welcome to the First Quarter Life Catholic post! Many of my posts will be about one of my favorite topics: music. My taste in music is diverse, spanning different genres and eras. A solid melody and meaningful lyrics are a winning combination.
The song in focus is “Why Georgia” by John Mayer. The acoustic sound paired with the thought-provoking lyrics make it one of my all-time top songs. I’ve been long-time fan of this song regardless of what chapter of my life I’m in when I listen, the timeless truths always resonate.
For context, John wrote this song towards the start of his career after he moved to Atlanta to pursue his dreams to be a musician. As he was trying to succeed in the music industry, he was questioning everything, especially his choices and his unknown future.
this week’s QLC
Question
“Everything happens for a reason” can encourage peace but it can also breed complacency — how can you view that saying so it is most helpful to you?
Line
‘Cause I wonder sometimes
About the outcome
Of a still verdictless life
Am I living it right?
Challenge
Reflect on one of your core values. Try to find a way to quickly check in if you’re living out that core value in a given moment, like keeping up with a habit, allocating time/expenses. This may indicate whether you’re closer to “living it right.”
As promised, I wanted to share the other part of how I came up with the name Quarter Life Catholic. In “Why Georgia” are the lyrics:
I rent a room and I fill the spaces with
Wood in places to make it feel like home
But all I feel’s alone
It might be a quarter life crisis
Or just the stirring in my soul
I hadn’t really been familiar with the term “quarter life crisis,” but I liked how it sounded and given the song’s significance to me, I figured I could tweak it a bit. Regardless of our age, that stirring in our soul is worth noting.
